Millers - the oldest taxi company in Preston...

The company was originally founded in 1870 and began with a fleet of more than 50 horse drawn cabs. These horse drawn cabs operated up to the early 1900's. It is worth noting that Millers was responsible for ensuring that water troughs were placed at the top of inclines in Preston so that horses could refresh themselves after a long hard slog!

When motorised vehicles came along Millers was the first company in Preston to offer saloon cars and limousines to the general public. Always being a firm at the forefront of advancement Millers also provided the first motorised ambulance to serve Preston and introduced the first charabanc (Coach) in the North of England.

During the 1960's Millers introduced the first black cabs to Preston.

The company remained in the hands of the Millers family until the year 2000 when it was purchased by the now Managing Director Sam McCullough. Sam grew the company over a four year period and decided that for the next stage of development he required a team around him to allow the business to expand.

January 1st 2004 the present Millers Citax Ltd was incorporated following a management buy out by four directors.

The aims of Millers is to become the largest and most professional Lancashire taxi company and is well ahead of targets.

2004 saw Millers pass its 100-car target and to assist in this expansion upgraded its fleet of standard, premier and executive vehicles with an investment in the year of over £250,000 in vehicles. The company also expanded its fleet of 16 seat minibuses and now offers regular school and rural bus services throughout Lancashire as well as a first class recreational service for large groups of people.

During 2005 Millers moved from its leased premises in the city centre and purchased its own property to cater for its present and future requirements. Today the fleet of over 120 cars, representing an investment of over £500,000 in vehicles, is controlled utilising the latest communication and satellite technology and keeps cars, wherever they are in the UK, in constant touch with headquarters.

Millers has long established contracts with leading public and private sector companies and organisations, who enjoy the benefits of being served by the regions largest taxi company.

Company Directors

Sam McCullough  (Managing Director)

Sam entered the taxi industry in 1997 after a long and successful period of running his own building and manufacturing firms. He operated in South Ribble and firmly established Avacab in Leyland. In the year 2000 he saw the opportunity presented when Millers came on the market and successfully acquired the business and grew it, as a sole trader, from only 12 cars on acquisition to over 50 cars by the end of 2003. He decided to incorporate the company at the end of 2003 and bring committed directors in to the business to help take it forward from that point.

Peter Osborne (Managing Director)

Peter plays a vital role in managing the Millers operations and ensuring everything runs smoothly and efficiently. Peter's vision ensures that Millers remains the leading Taxi services in the North West, with total committment to excellent customer service and total investment in the latest technology to improve all areas of our taxi operations.

Kath McCullough (Personnel & Finance Director)

Kath joined the board during 2005 as the personnel & financial roles increased. She has spent the majority of her life looking after the books of Sam's other businesses and was the natural choice to fulfil this important role within the company.
